Hydrocortisone on Pressor Response and Vascular Smooth Muscle Response to Various Pressor Substances

Abstract
Hydrocortisone augmented markedly pressor response of normal and adrenalectoinized rabbits to epinephrine (0.25-1.0¥ìg/kg) and norepinephrine (0.25 ¥ìg/kg) it augmented slightly tyramine effect; it did not affect angiotensin effect. The responsiveness to these pressor substances was not different in normal and adrenalectomized animals. The resting blood pressure level of rabbits was not elevated by hydrocortisone. The contractile response of aortic strip of rabbit to epinephrine and norepinephrine was potentiated by hydrocortisone but the response to tyramine and angiotensin was not affected. These data indicate that the potentiating action of hydrocortisone is not related to activity of the adrenal cortex, and that the potentiation is selective to catecholamines.
